Once, in Bursa, a member of the guild built a fountain and wrote above it:

“Halal for all – haram only for Muslims.”

At the time when Bursa was the capital of the Ottoman Empire, this caused great unrest. People went to the judge, and then the case reached the sultan. The man who built the fountain told the sultan that he could prove why he had written that.

First, he asked for a rabbi to be arrested. Immediately, the entire Jewish community rose up – they went to the sultan, demanded his release, sent letters and petitions, and the rabbi was soon freed.

Then he asked for a priest to be arrested. The same thing happened – the Christians revolted, demanded justice, and the priest was freed.

Finally, he asked for a prominent imam to be arrested while delivering a sermon. The imam was removed from the pulpit. No one stood up to ask what was happening. No one followed him. No one went to the sultan to ask where he was.

On the contrary, people began saying: “Who knows what he did...” “Surely he wasn’t arrested without reason...” “If I had known what he was like, I would never have respected him...” After seven days, the imam was released. Then the man asked the sultan: “Isn’t the water haram for such Muslims?”
