One of the beautiful customs nurtured for generations among the people of Labunishta is ziyaret – the visit to the sick.
When it is heard that someone has fallen ill, especially if it is a serious illness, few remain indifferent. Relatives, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances go to visit and wish a speedy recovery.
In the past, this tradition was even more pronounced. The elders say that when it was heard across the village that someone fell ill, it did not matter if they were family, a compatriot, neighbor, or just an old friend or acquaintance. People would go to visit. Sometimes, quite literally the whole village would pass through the sick person’s home, just to show that they were not alone and to wish them good health.
Even today, the expression remains:
“Dzhishmishala!”
A word used by our elders when visiting the sick, originating from the Turkish “Geçmiş olsun” – meaning: “let it pass,” “wishing you well,” “get well soon.”
In times when life becomes faster and people busier, it is worth preserving exactly these habits of our elders.
Let us not forget the sick. Let us visit them, wish them health, and show them they are not alone.
And this is one of the beautiful traits by which the people of Labunishta have always been recognized.
