Today, November 17, marks exactly 29 years since the historic day when Labuništa became the seat of its own municipality within our country. The Municipality of Labuništa was officially established on November 17, 1996, and existed until April 12, 2004, when it was abolished and incorporated into the Municipality of Struga due to new territorial reorganization.
Within the municipality, alongside Labuništa, the neighboring villages of Podgorci, Boroec, and Tašmaruništa also belonged. This short but extremely dynamic eight-year period is remembered as the "golden age" for the region. The then mayor, the late Jakup Qazimoski, is still remembered with great respect for the development and progress he brought to the villages.
It was precisely during these years that Labuništa experienced its greatest infrastructural boom: the old cobblestone streets were replaced with asphalt and paving blocks, a modern water supply and sewage system were built, the longstanding issue with the river, which had previously been a cause of disease spread, was resolved, and a new building for the elementary school was constructed. Many projects that residents had been waiting for years became a reality at that time.
History shows that Labuništa functioned as an administrative center in other periods as well. Before 1996, the village was part of various territorial organizations: – from 1965 to 1996 – within the large Municipality of Struga, – from 1957 to 1965 – also in the Municipality of Struga, – during the period 1955-1957 – the seat of the Municipality of Veleshta, – from 1952 to 1955 – the seat of the Municipality of Labuništa (together with Boroec and Podgorci), – from 1950 to 1952 – the seat of the eponymous municipality (Labuništa and Podgorci).
Today, as we reflect on this significant anniversary, there remains a feeling of pride and gratitude for the time when Labuništa was a center of development, vision, and progress. The memory of those years is a strong reminder that with proper leadership, dedication, and love for one's homeland, many things are possible.
Labuništa continues to live, grow, and develop – with a future built on a past filled with hard work, perseverance, and unity.
